For a long time I’ve been contemplating if Macs are any good. Finally decided to figure it out myself and ordered a iMac with 27” display and Core 2 Duo processor.
Basically I’m looking for
- better display (led backlit ips panel)
- better photo management and workflow (Aperture 3 / iPhoto) – create link to existing photos
- fast startup time from hibernation
- robust operating system
- decent software development environment (pyobjc & xcode?)
Known issues
- quality issues with the display (yellow tint, flickering, …)
- dvd drive location easily scratches the disks
- keyboard layout
Hope my expectations are not set too high…

Aperture I don’t personally know but iPhoto somewhat sucks, or I just don’t know how to use it. For example, I have a network drive where I store my photos. With Picasa I can manipulate the photos on the NAS. If I try to do that same thing with iPhoto, it always tries to copy the photos to the local HD. If you find a workaround let me know :)
Indeed, Mac OS X really boots (and shutsdown) really fast and the OS is in general good. There are, however, some issues with the UI.
Nevertheless, good luck with your new toy!

I have a feeling that Aperture is photo-management wise an older brother of iPhoto. I’ll probably first try iPhoto and then Aperture trial and mess up my Flickr stream at least twice while trying to get em to sync :)
Picasa is what I use now for the 98% and the biggest thing missing is the spatial enhancement (dodge & burn, spatially varying unsharp mask etc) , which I believe are missing from iPhoto while Aperture has those features.
